The Power Of A Healthy Lifestyle

I don’t generally write the Hot Topics for Better Life, so please bear with me as I dive into the deep end with a note of encouragement for everyone who takes the time to care for their bodies, to supplement with good vitamins and minerals, and to exercise every day.

A few weeks ago, Momma Pat (Better Life’s founder and my Momma) slipped on the stairs at our offices while carrying a grocery bag filled with baking supplies in each hand. She somersaulted down an entire flight of stairs, and her fall was finally stopped by the wall on the landing. We ran to her thinking that she must have broken just about every bone in her body--that’s serious at any age, and even more so for people over 70.

After a visit to the emergency room, scans, x-rays, and two orthopedic evaluations, the doctors determined that Momma Pat’s shoulder was dislocated and that she had chipped a bone in her ball-and-socket joint. One week later she underwent outpatient arthroscopic surgery to repair that and some muscle damage. She was back to work the Monday after surgery and is ready for rehab in two weeks. She didn’t break a single bone.

So what does this have to do with good health habits and “walking the talk” all these years? Many physicians and surgical attendants were amazed to observe the positive bone density, supple ligaments, and oxygenated tissues in Momma during surgery. I heard doctors and nurses remarking on her excellent health on numerous occasions when they thought no one was listening. To hear that our Momma Pat is an incredibly healthy role model for men and women is not news to those who know her; to hear her medical team tell me that she will be able to continue her work and her vision without hindrance is truly amazing.

Of course, we can’t promise you’ll never break a bone, but a healthy lifestyle is good preventive medicine in many ways--and Momma’s a wonderful example of how it can pay off when you eat right, supplement wisely, and exercise regularly. Here’s to you, Momma Pat!
