How Healthy Are We?
Patricia Zifferblatt | March 1, 2003

With so much information available about health, are we as a society getting healthier?
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem so. Some of the recent health data just released by the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta shouts words of warning to all Americans:
  • Do you know that in the year 2003, it's estimated that about 1.5 million new cases of cancer will be diagnosed?

  • Do you know that 50 Celebrex tablets or capsules for relief of arthritis pain costs about $240? And prescription drug sales in the U.S. for 2000 totaled $145 billion!

  • Do you know that among women over 20 in the U.S., 57% of Caucasians, 77% of African-Americans, and 72% of Hispanics are overweight or obese?

  • Do you know cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the greatest killer of both men and women in America today? About one of every 2.5 deaths is due to CVD, and every 33 seconds, another American dies of CVD.

  • Do you know that one out of every five men and women in America has high blood pressure? Many of them are not diagnosed, not taking medications, and not making lifestyle changes to better control their blood pressure.

  • Do you know that there was an 8.2% increase in diagnosed cases of diabetes in 2000--in only one year? And there are 11 million diagnosed cases of diabetes in the U.S., with another 6 million cases not diagnosed!
Ladies and Gentlemen, we at Better Life Unlimited are passionate about health and fitness--passionate about your health and fitness! So many times I have said from the stage, "We have the best medicine in the world right here in the U.S., but medicine costs money, lots of money, and we cannot afford a sick society."

All the Health Educators at Better Life Unlimited have been on the road in 2003, and perhaps we've been invited into your community to help you and yours better understand the whys and wherefores of the health status of the U.S. and Canada. If we have visited you, good. If we haven't, then you may want to schedule a Product Education Program for your group.

In any case, visit our website regularly for the latest in health, fitness, lifestyle, and supplements. We can't afford a sick society, but I'm confident that together we can help to make our great countries healthier, more fit, and a better place for our children.
