Celiac disease, also known as celiac sprue or gluten-sensitive enteropathy, is an autoimmune disease of the small intestine that can affect both children and adults. Most cases of celiac disease are caused by a specific defect in a gene. Almost all celiac patients carry the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DQ2 and DQ8 genes; your doctor can order genetic tests to confirm the diagnosis.
